Quinlivan condemns attack on bus on Hyde Road

*5 Windows smashed on Bus on Hyde Road causing thousands of euro in damage

* Bus Service withdrawn from 1pm today.

Speaking today Cllr Quinlivan said: “I was contacted by a number of Bus Drivers and local residents to tell me that a bus had 5 windows smashed on the Hyde Road yesterday evening. The damage is estimated to run into thousands of euro. It is claimed that a group of young lads in a pre-arranged attack smashed the windows on the driver’s side of the Bus as it traveled along Hyde Road in the Ballinacurra Weston area. I understand that the local service along the Hyde road was withdrawn from 1pm today due to concerns for the safety of drivers and passengers that a repeat event may occur.”

“It is also claimed that those involved claimed they did this in response to the council seizing some horses in the local area. If this is the case then the Gardaí need to act urgently and ensure that this does not happen again and that those responsible are made to account for their actions.

Councillor Maurice Quinlivan is calling for immediate action to combat the climate of fear resulting from this destructive behaviour of a small number of individuals most of whom come from outside of local area.”

“Obviously the bus service is a vital transportation link for all in the area going about their daily business. It is a very important service especially for elderly residents who depend on the service to get around and get into the city centre to do their shopping and other business.

“I want to condemn this activity and I have been in touch with the council and Gardaí on this matter. I will also be in contact Bus Eireann, who unfortunately were not contactable over the weekend, on this serious issue.”
